Currently, the H-1B cap is set at 85,000 per year.   Among them, there are 65,000 H-1B visas commonly known as the “regular cap,”  and 20,000 “advanced degree exemption” workers with master’s or doctoral degrees from U.S. colleges or universities.

The new proposal, initiated by two Republican senators, would increase the regular cap to 85,000 and uncap the advanced-degree pool.  If needed, the senators suggest increasing the annual cap by 110,000 visas.

Linkedin.com lists the what they say are the top 20 emerging jobs in the United States.  They state that “Tech is king” and that there is a “Low supply of talent available for top jobs”.

Data scientist roles have grown over 650 percent since 2012, but currently 35,000 people in the US have data science skills, while hundreds of companies are hiring for those roles – even those you may not expect in sectors like retail and finance – supply of candidates for these roles cannot keep up with demand.

Be Prepared for Emerging U.S. Jobs

At the end of 2017, Linkedin.com concluded that one of the crucial factors in finding gainful employment in the United States is to “Future-proof” your skills.  Keep in mind that some of the jobs they list even did not exist 5 years ago.

By 2026, nearly 11.5 million more jobs will be created, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.  It is interesting to note that according to the World Economic Forum, 65% of children starting elementary school today will likely work in job types that don’t even yet exist.

As indicated in the illustration above, seven out of ten emerging jobs are tech-related.   Keep this in mind when focusing on your ultimate goal: having your H-1B petition approved.    Envision this and take appropriate action.   By doing so you can help ensure that you pick the perfect college major, and get hired in the U.S. after your graduation.
