Top U.S. Colleges That Don’t Require SAT Scores

Are you still working diligently on the SAT or considering to take the SAT soon?  Take a look at the table below because now there are more than 1,000 U.S. accredited 4-year colleges and universities may not need SAT as a required application credential.  Please note that there are 2,870 accredited 4-year colleges, according to the latest data released by the National Center for Education Statistics.  That means more than 35% of the accredited 4-year colleges don’t require SAT scores for admissions.  Surprisingly, top schools like University of Chicago, New York University, George Washington University, and the University of Texas Austin have also de-emphasized the importance of SAT or ACT.

However, the majority of U.S. colleges, especially schools in the top 1% like Harvard, Stanford, MIT, and many other prestigious institutions still demand SAT or ACT scores.

In the table below, the ranking is based on the Best Colleges 2019 by the U.S. News and World Report.  The abbreviations used in the column for rankings are:

2. NLAC: National Liberal Arts Colleges
3. RU(N): Regional Universities North
4. RU(M): Regional Universities Midwest
5. RU(S): Regional Universities South
6. RU(W): Regional Universities West
